The tensile-strength test is inherently destructive; during the process of collating material, the sample is ruined. Though this is excusable when a plentiful store of the material is at hand, nondestructive procedures are safer for materials that are dear or hard to create or that have been shaped into finished or semicompleted items.

Liquids

One common nondestructive procedure, used to detect surface breaks and flaws in metals, uses a penetrating liquid, which needs to be visibly coloured or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the metal sample and set to fill into any perceptible imperfections, the liquid is removed, leaving readily uncovered markings and imperfections. An analogous test, used for nonmetals, employs an electrically charged liquid rubbed on the nonmetal surface. After excess fluid is cleaned off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the material and draws to the breaks. Neither of these methods, however, can find internal imperfections.

Radiation

Internal, as well as external imperfections, can be identified under X-ray or gamma-ray technologies in which the radiation passes through the sample and implicates on an ideal photographic film. In some cases, it can be possible to nominate the X rays on a single plane in the object, bringing up a three-dimensional description of the flaw markings along with its site.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts involves transmission of sound waves out of human hearing range within the test sample. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is sent over one area of the subject, reflected by the other area, then returned into a receiver that is situated at the original end. By impinging on a weakness or failure in the piece, the signal is reflected and its movement changed. The actual delay becomes a signal of the location of the imperfection; a map of the sample can be made to locate the area and form of the marks. With the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver need to be started on opposite sides of the subject; delays in the movement of the sound waves are used to find and measure flaws. Usually a water medium is used through the use of which transmitter, sample, and receiver are immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic elements of a sample are heavily reflected by its overall form, magnetic methods are sometimes used to reveal the area and indicative geometry of flaws and breaks. For magnetic testing, an item is utilized that holds a sizeable coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held within this primary object is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is attached an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the larger coil forces the current to charge within the secondary coil by way of the method of induction. When an iron bar is inserted into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the second current will implicate flaws in the sample. This technique only detects changes within parts on the length of a rod and will not find longer or continuous imperfections that often. An analogous process, making use of eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also may be used to find errors and marks. A steady current is induced in part of the test subject. Marks that are found across the track of the current change resistance of the test piece; this alteration may be measured under better items.

Infrared

Infrared techniques have also been employed to detect material continuity in complicated construction items. By testing the value of adhesive conjoinments in the sandwich core and facing sheets with a ordinary sandwich construction object like plywood, for example, heat is applied in the surface of the sandwich skin sample. Where bond lines are continuous, the core samples allow a heat marking on the surface material, and the localised temperatures of the face will drop steadily on the bond lines. When a bond line may be insignificant, gone, or faulty, however, local temperature should not change. Infrared photography of the area can then reveal the location and area of the defective adhesive. A variation of this process employs thermal coatings to change appearance on reaching a determined temperature.

Lastly, nondestructive test procedures also are seen to permit a entire knowledge of the mechanical aspects of a test material. Ultrasonics and thermal procedures appear the most trustworthy in this situation.
